What the 2027 Smoke Alarm Law Means for Your Home
Queensland's smoke alarm laws have rolled out in stages since 2017. The final stage starts on 1 January 2027, when every home, including owner-occupied homes, must comply.
Your home needs smoke alarms that are:
- Photoelectric and meet Australian Standard AS 3786-2014
- Interconnected, so when one sounds, they all sound
- In every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level
Hardwired or battery? If your home already has 240V hardwired alarms, they must be replaced with 240V alarms, and only a licensed electrician can connect them. Battery alarms can be replaced with 10-year non-removable battery alarms.

Smoke alarm questions, answered
Do I need to upgrade my smoke alarms before 2027?
Yes, if your home doesn't already meet the current rules. From 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes need photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level.
Can I replace my hardwired smoke alarms with battery ones?
No. The Queensland Fire Department says existing 240V hardwired alarms must be replaced with 240V alarms, and they must be connected by a licensed electrician.
How many smoke alarms does my home need?
One in every bedroom, one in each hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the home, and at least one on every level. A typical 3-bedroom single-level home needs around 4 to 5. We'll confirm the exact number when you enquire.
How much does a smoke alarm upgrade cost?
It depends on how many alarms your home needs and whether it is hardwired or battery. You'll get your price before any work starts.
Do I need a smoke alarm certificate to sell my home?
The Queensland Fire Department says a certificate of compliance is not a legal requirement, but many agents ask for one. Hardwired alarms installed by a licensed electrician come with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance.
I'm renting. Who is responsible for the smoke alarms?
Your landlord is responsible for installing compliant alarms. Tenants need to test and clean each alarm at least once every 12 months. If your alarms need upgrading, let your landlord or property manager know.
